A stitch is
a sentence.

Satu jahitan, satu kalimat.

Tatreez is a language that happens to be beautiful. Before literacy reached the villages, a woman’s dress said where she was born, what her family farmed, and who she had buried. The chest panel was the paperwork.

Nothing here is decorated with Palestine. Each object carries one line of that language — engraved into steel, embossed into leather, woven into cloth. Take the motif off and there is no product left.

    Every museum needs one lit room. Nothing here is doing anything a Tuesday would not ask of it: held, carried, drunk from, worn to work.

    1. 1944

      A voice from Jerusalem

      Muhammad Amin al‑Husseini, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, broadcasts support for Indonesian independence — a full year before Indonesia declares it. In Indonesian accounts this is remembered as the first foreign voice to back the republic.

    2. 1945

      Indonesia declares

      17 August. Soekarno and Hatta proclaim independence in Jakarta. The Netherlands does not accept it, and four years of war follow.

    3. 1947

      The Arab world answers first

      Egypt becomes the first state to formally recognise the Republic. It follows a campaign across the Arab League in which Palestinian voices were prominent — recognition arriving from people who had no state of their own to offer.

    4. 1955

      Bandung

      Indonesia hosts the Asian–African Conference. Its closing communiqué declares support for the rights of the Arab people of Palestine. Twenty‑nine countries sign.

    5. 1962

      The debt, repaid in public

      Jakarta hosts the Asian Games and refuses to admit the Israeli delegation. Indonesia is suspended by the IOC for it. Soekarno does not reverse the decision.

    6. Now

      Still no embassy

      Indonesia has never established diplomatic relations with Israel. Eighty years on, the position taken in 1945 has not been traded away.

    “For as long as the independence of the Palestinian people has not been handed to the Palestinians, Indonesia stands against the occupation.”

    The 1944 broadcast is the account commonly cited in Indonesian histories. Formal state recognition in 1947 came from Egypt.

    Palestina.id was a newsroom before it was a shop, and the shop exists to keep the newsroom running. A share of profit goes to humanitarian programmes in Palestine, distributed through organisations that were already there.
